Homewood Suites is a popular hotel chain owned by Hilton Hotels and Resorts in the United States. The Washington, D.C. hotel was fully occupied and operational during the demolition and concrete restoration. The building is nine stories above grade and has a cast-in-place concrete parking structure one level below grade.
This project included the demolition of the concrete sidewalk and existing traffic coating. The cast-in-place concrete required full-depth concrete restoration, and we installed new curb formwork. The surrounding sidewalk also needed to be replaced.
Project Overview
The Homewood Suites project in Washington, DC, is a testament to the seamless integration of modern hospitality and thoughtful construction practices. This location enhances the brand's presence in the capital and showcases cutting-edge design and construction techniques tailored for functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Construction Challenges with a Full-occupancy Hotel
One of the significant challenges faced during this project was managing construction activities while maintaining full occupancy of the hotel; with guests frequently accessing adjoining amenities, our team had to implement comprehensive safety measures to ensure minimal disruption. This required meticulous planning and coordination between multiple contractors, subcontractors, and hotel management to establish a streamlined construction schedule that was efficient and respectful of guests' experiences.
The need for demolition work on existing concrete surfaces highlighted another challenge. Removing old sidewalks and traffic coatings necessitated precision work to avoid damage to adjoining structures. Our skilled crew utilized advanced demolition techniques that ensured an efficient process while prioritizing safety standards. The clear communication with hotel staff throughout this phase allowed us to create temporary pedestrian pathways while maintaining access for emergency services.
Structural Rehabilitation
With the old infrastructure dismantled, our focus shifted toward rehabilitating the cast-in-place concrete structure. Full-depth concrete restoration was essential due to existing wear caused by weathering and usage over time. Our engineering team worked closely with architectural partner Simpson Gumpertz & Heger to develop a comprehensive strategy that would restore structural integrity and extend the lifespan of key components.
New curb formwork was carefully designed and installed. This component required precision craftsmanship and an understanding of site dynamics, ensuring all elements aligned with regulatory standards. Using high-quality materials, we created long-lasting improvements aligned with Homewood Suites' commitment to guest satisfaction.
Enhancing Guest Experience
Beyond structural updates, our vision extended towards enhancing the overall guest experience at Homewood Suites Washington, DC. The replacement of the surrounding sidewalk plays a pivotal role in this initiative by providing safer access points for patrons entering or exiting the hotel premises.
Careful consideration was given to aesthetics; new materials were chosen for their durability and ability to create an inviting and welcoming atmosphere. By transforming ordinary pathways into visually appealing landscapes, we aimed to foster an environment where guests feel relaxed and safe when they arrive.
The Homewood Suites concrete restoration project in Washington, D.C., exemplifies how innovative construction methods can blend seamlessly with operational requirements. From overcoming logistical hurdles associated with working around an occupied building to implementing state-of-the-art rehabilitation techniques on existing structures, this project has been executed with precision and care.
