Completed in 1976, the Edward Garmatz Federal Courthouse Plaza was named after Baltimore native and State Representative Edward Garmatz. The plaza is located outside the district courthouse, which services the city of Baltimore, MD.
ShanCon first needed to surface prep and clean the site to waterproof the concrete in the plaza. We used elastomeric sheet waterproofing on the plaza to protect the area from water damage. Given the courthouse's significance and strict regulations surrounding federal properties, we also ensured that the installation met all necessary federal guidelines and standards. Our team worked meticulously to ensure that the waterproofing process would protect the plaza's structural integrity and maintain its aesthetic appeal.
Surface Preparation: The Foundation of Success
Before any concrete waterproofing could begin, proper surface preparation was important. We started by conducting a thorough assessment of the plaza. This included inspecting the existing materials and identifying any areas needing repair or treatment. Our skilled crew efficiently removed debris, dirt, and any previous coatings that might impede adhesion. This step is crucial because even minor imperfections can compromise the effectiveness of waterproofing systems.
Once cleaned, our experts repaired any cracks or damage in the substrate. These repairs were essential to create a uniform surface for applying elastomeric sheet waterproofing. The intention was to ensure a flawless finish that adheres well and resists deterioration over time.
The Benefits of Elastomeric Sheet Waterproofing
Choosing elastomeric sheet waterproofing for the plaza was a strategic decision based on its numerous advantages. This waterproofing offers exceptional flexibility and durability, making it an ideal choice for high-traffic areas like plazas surrounding courthouses. It can easily accommodate movement without cracking or losing integrity, which is vital given that natural settling may occur over time.
Also, elastomeric sheets provide superior resistance to extreme weather conditions, ensuring that rainwater and snowmelt do not penetrate the underlying structures. Given Baltimore's diverse climate—from humid summers to snowy winters—this feature significantly extends the life expectancy of both the plaza and its concrete waterproofing system.
A Commitment to Quality
At ShanCon, we are committed not only to quality workmanship but also to excellence in customer service. Communication with stakeholders was key throughout this project to ensure that everything ran smoothly and adhered to planned timelines. Our team informed all parties about progress while remaining flexible to accommodate necessary adjustments.
We recognize that this plaza serves more than just a functional purpose; it is also a public space for community engagement and accessibility. Therefore, attention was paid to how well our work would stand up against water damage and how it complemented the overall aesthetic of downtown Baltimore.
A Lasting Legacy
The completion of the Edward Garmatz Federal Courthouse Plaza project illustrates our dedication to preserving important civic spaces while implementing advanced engineering solutions. By prioritizing thorough surface preparation and choosing high-quality materials like elastomeric sheet waterproofing, we have ensured that this historic site will remain functional and beautiful for years.
